Marsaskala (or Marsascala) is a delightful area located on the sea in the south of Malta
The town is built around two main bays: Marsaskala and San Tumas, just over a kilometer apart in a straight line. The two bays are connected by a promenade with a beautiful view of the marina and the salt pans below.
The only real monument in the area is the San Tumas Tower, located on the peninsula that separates the two bays: it is a large watchtower built by order of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt in 1614. This bastion was part of the so-called Wignacourt Towers, or the system of fortifications built precisely to defend the Maltese coasts from Turkish attacks. The San Tumas Tower cannot be visited inside, however you can easily get there from the promenade.
BEACHES IN MARSASKALA
The area offers a couple of beaches that are easily accessible on foot, by public transport or by car: they tend to be frequented mainly by locals and tourists who live in the town, so there are much fewer crowds than elsewhere. The sand is pleasant, there are also rocks in this area that are flat and smooth, and there are also holes in the rock where you can plant your umbrella.
St. Thomas Bay – St. Thomas Bay or Bajja ta’ San Tumas – is located about ten minutes walk from the center of Marsaskala. The area is easily accessible, with a couple of sandy coves separated by numerous flat rocks where you can sunbathe.
In the bay you will also find shops and restaurants. To get to the beach you can get off at the Bajja stop, served by all the lines that arrive in Marsaskala
In front of the bay is Zion, one of the few open-air reggae clubs in all of Malta: in summer there are evenings every day of the week, although Fridays and Saturdays are the most popular.
Zonqor Point is located on the other side of Marsaskala Bay, beyond the church of St. Anne. In fact there are no real beaches, the sea is practically open. The good thing is that it is one of the few places where it is always possible to park your car, it is also a good place for diving.
